A headbutt ! Good job nobody's watching.

If it were cooler and I knew what time the event was to take place, I would go to the Champs Elysées to see the French football team return to Paris.
They deserved to win on the night but Zidane's rib-crunching headbutt is all I can visualise of the game. What on earth possessed him to do that? What was said to him to provoke such a violent, uncontrollable response?

It's a sad farewell for a great player.

An Italian lip-reader last night claimed to have deciphered the words Marco Materazzi said to Zinédine Zidane that provoked the French captain into butting him in the chest during Sunday's World Cup final, the great midfielder's final act before a red card ended his career in top-level football.

According to the BBC, Materazzi said, "I wish an ugly death to you and all your family," and then told Zidane to "go fuck yourself".

London - Italy's Marco Materazzi called Zinedine Zidane "son of a terrorist whore" just before France's captain gave him a brutal head-butt to the chest during the World Cup soccer final, Britain's top forensic lip reader says.

The Times newspaper hired Jessica Rees, whose skill has seen her summoned as an expert witness at criminal trials, to study a tape of Sunday's match that saw Zidane get a red card for his apparently spontaneous assault.

"After an exhaustive study of the match video, and with the help of an Italian translator, Rees claimed that Materazzi called Zidane 'the son of a terrorist whore' before adding 'so just f*** off' for good measure," it said.

Materazzi on Monday denied calling Zidane a terrorist, adding that "I don't even know what the word means".

The Daily Mail - which wrongly described Marseilles native Zidane as "Algeria-born" - said on Tuesday that it too engaged the services of a lip-reader, whom it did not identify, who reached the same conclusion as Rees.

The Independent cited lip-readers for Brazil's Globo TV as concluding that Materazzi had told Zidane that his sister was a "prostitute".

A fairly comprehensive choice of insults there.
I heard his Mum had just been taken ill and was in hospital so he was more than usually sensitive.

No excuse, though, eh?

Perhaps a little problem with impulse-control?
